Understanding the Northumbrians: Cultural Archaeology and the Pursuit of the Longue Durée in the History of North East England

From Bede to Brexit, Dan will explore the historical roots of the persistently distinctive culture of Northumbria and what the future might hold for this recognisably different part of England.

Born in North Shields and brought up in Northumberland, Dr Dan Jackson is a graduate of the universities of Northumbria and Liverpool. His Northumbria University PhD was published by Liverpool University Press in 2009 as Popular Opposition to Irish Home Rule in Edwardian Britain. His latest, bestselling, book The Northumbrians: North-East England and Its People: A New History was published by Hurst in 2019 to critical acclaim in the Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday and The New Statesman both of which named it as one of their books of the year. He has also written for History Today and The New Statesman and has appeared on the BBC’s 'Start the Week', ‘Making History’ and ‘Who Do You Think You Are’.

Dan was formerly a visiting fellow at Northumbria University, and a founding member of the Northumbria World War One Commemoration Project which received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2015.  After over a decade working in the public sector Dan is now a director in the North East regional NHS.

Refreshments will be available from 6pm with the lecture 6.30pm - 7.30pm.
