Thomas - Vaughan Oliver Graphic Design Scholarship recipient

Name: Thomas Adey

Course: Graphic Design (BA Hons)

Scholarship: The Vaughan Oliver Graphic Design Scholarship Year 2

What is it like studying at Northumbria?

My degree is a very unique case where most of our work takes place in a studio environment, almost mirroring what we would do in industry. Lecturers encourage us to think beyond the conventional, nurturing those ideas into fully realised pieces of design. This is the essence that makes our work valuable in the industry, standing out from all others. I am also a member of an academic society for my course.

How were you awarded the scholarship, and what benefits has it provided?

The scholarship I was approved for was done out of nomination. A project we worked on for six weeks was assessed by people from the industry. My work was chosen for the scholarship, and it reminds me that I am capable of producing high quality work, also serving as a way of enhancing the value of the work I produced, given how it has been received well by the industry, particularly those who worked closely with the late Vaughan Oliver, a north-eastern graphic designer applauded for his unique design philosophy.

What are your future goals?

My future goals are to land in an agency, performing work for a regenerative purpose. The course has revealed what options I have at my disposal, and the scholarship has given me the material means to pursue them with relative ease.

If you could give advice to somebody considering university, what would it be?

Do things. It doesn’t matter how big or small. One thing leads to something that leads to something bigger. The more things you do, the more perspectives you have that could make a difference someday.
