What was it about Northumbria University that made you want to study here?

I have a sister that attended Northumbria a few years ago and she had a great university experience. This was one of the reasons that influenced me to choose Northumbria as well as their high-quality programmes and industry-related curriculum. Northumbria also has excellent career opportunities both regionally and nationally perfect for anyone who wants to get into the industry whilst studying.

Did you face any barriers to Higher Education, or was there anything that made you doubt your decision to come to university?

I had many challenges to face, but I have never doubted my decision or regretted attending university. For most of my life, I was battling with a health condition which was prone to flaring up and made it difficult for me to do everyday tasks.  I had to work twice as hard to get to where I am today, and I am proud of how far I have come. Even with these challenges, I pursued studying computer science because I enjoyed it as hobby for a long time and wanted to take it a step further. Also, it would be a great way to kick start my career in computer science and offer me a stable foundation to learn from.

What is it like studying at Northumbria?

My course is very practical in the sense that we are creating projects/applications and using new software which helps to broaden our understanding. Northumbria has excellent facilities for students such as the library which has been a vital part of my student journey. The most favourite part of my course is the challenge of learning new skills and using them to create new solutions.

How were you awarded the scholarship, and what benefits has it provided?

I was seeking financial help due to personal difficulties and came across the application on the Northumbria scholarships website and applied.  Thanks to the scholarship programme, I can continue studying whilst dealing with my health issues. The financial help that has been provided to me was truly appreciated and put to good to use. It was also an asset for my CV as It demonstrates hard work and dedication and enhances credibility in competitive academic and job markets.

What are your future goals?

My goals for the near future include finishing my masters with a distinction and find a good job that offers a route for professional development in the software development sector or a graduate programme that can lead me to that.

If you could give advice to somebody considering university, what would it be?

Go for it! Not only does higher education do wonders for your career, but it will also open many doors, give you networking opportunities, access to resources, allow you to work on personal development and expose you to different cultures. Even if you don’t end up using your degree it will be an experience that you can learn and grow from.
