By studying a course within the Department of Social Sciences you will be joining a community of enquiring minds who are experts in their fields. Our aim is to understand and explain the social and political world, how relationships and alliances are formed and communicated and how inequalities are justified and challenged. Our students are supported to become decision makers and game changers who shape the world of the future.

Organisations we work with

We recognise that professional experience is invaluable to your learning and so have built strong relationships and partnerships with organisations including Northumbria Police, COCO, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Geneva), Swedish Red Cross, Voluntary Service Overseas, CISV International, YOT (The Youth Offending Team) and The British Council. 

These partnerships enable us to develop our curriculum, keeping it cutting edge. 

They ensure our research has an impact on the work and policy of important social and political organizations and services, benefiting both our specialized fields and broader social science courses. They also offer opportunities for our students to apply their knowledge through work and research placements, volunteering and accredited work-related learning modules.  Our students have worked in a range of challenging environments such as prisons, youth offending teams, homeless charities and parliamentary offices in addition to exchanges with overseas universities.
