SPACE ENGINEERING

Our interest is to develop collector devices efficiently converting the Sun’s energy, or other high density power sources where the Sun is not available (e.g. dark side of the moon), into electricity. One space application being currently investigated is to collect and convert laser power into useable power for future space and lunar vehicles. Space-based Solar Power is a growing and exciting research field which can either be considered to contribute to provide zero carbon power to Earth or for Space exploration.

“This investment marks an exciting step in our collaboration with Northumbria University as we look to advance the use of space-based solar power for satellites, space vehicles and potentially useable power back on earth. The North East has a growing and vibrant space sector and we’re delighted to invest further as it becomes a leading force in the global space economy.” - Paul Livingston, Chief Executive of Lockheed Martin UK.
