NU EDI Conference 2024

Information about the NU Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Conference 2024

Our inaugural EDI conference will take place on Wednesday 5 June 2024 on City Campus, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The conference will showcase the intersectional and interdisciplinary approaches our community takes to ensuring Northumbria is an inclusive place to work and study. The day will be opened by our Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Andy Long and will then feature a variety of key-note speakers, panels, presentations, workshops, and a project library and initiative showcase.

The conference is open to all Northumbria colleagues and students.

10.00am - 10.10am: Conference Introduction with Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Andy Long

10.10am - 10.50am: Keynote 1 - 'Embedding EDI Into All That We Do' with Rachel Brown, Mark Lambert, Arushi Sinha and other colleagues working around EDI

11.00am - 12.00pm: Parallel Session 1

  1. Presentations: 'Inclusion across the University'
  2. Presentations: 'Navigating Neurodivergence at Northumbria'
  3. Presentations: 'Amplifying Inclusion through Research, Networks and Projects' 
  4. Facilitated Discussion: 'Religion and Intersections: Scoping the issues in a University context and beyond'
  5. Workshop: 'Active Bystander Training' 

12.00pm - 1.00pm: Networking Lunch and Project Library and Initiative Showcase

1.00pm - 1.50pm: Keynote 2 - 'How Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom influence Equality Diversity and Inclusion' with Deputy Vice Chancellor Tom Lawson and Principal Associate at Weightmans LLP, Melanie Steed

2.00pm - 3.00pm: Parallel Session 2

  1. Presentations: 'Inclusive Design in Teaching'
  2. Presentations: 'Showcasing the DFN Project Search support internship for young adults with learning disabilities'
  3. Facilitated Discussion: 'Definitions of Islamophobia'
  4. Craft Workshop: 'Traditional Romany Paper Flower Making'

3.10pm - 4.00pm: Keynote 3 - 'Progression within our Focus Areas of Inclusion' with our University Senior Sponsors for Equality

4.00pm - 4.15pm: Closing remarks with Chief People Officer, Jane Embley
