HEALTH ECONOMICS AT NORTHUMBRIA (HE@N)

Health Economics at Northumbria (HE@N) is a research group that develops and applies rigorous economic and statistical methods to improve health, wellbeing, and health and social care.

Our aims are to:

  • Advance research on the economics of health and social care to standards of international excellence
  • Develop and apply economic techniques that improve care and population health and wellbeing
  • Provide our partners with expertise in health economics
  • Build and sustain capacity in the economics of health

Our work is structured around five research themes: public health economics and the wider determinants of health and wellbeing; methodological innovations in health economics; economic evaluation across traditional and non-traditional designs; econometrics and applied statistics; and policy evaluation, resource allocation and systems research. Across these themes we examine cost-effectiveness, efficiency, equity and return on investment throughout the health and social care system.

HE@N holds a substantial portfolio of applied and methodological research, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the research councils, charitable organisations and industry. Our multidisciplinary work is undertaken with partners across health and social care, local government, the VCFSE sector, and the policy and research communities, spanning the North East and North Cumbria, the wider UK, and internationally — including India, Thailand, Vietnam, Kenya, the Netherlands, Denmark and New Zealand. Through this work, the group contributes substantially to the NHS, to local authorities, and to decision-making at national and local levels.
