KB6009 - Mechanical Design & Analysis

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the application of advanced design techniques and technologies for mechanical engineering problems. You will be covering a range of design techniques such as; Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly, Design Failure Modes Effects Analysis etc, within integrated Computer Aided Engineering systems (CAD, CAM, FEA and CFD). As these approaches are interconnected and you will be expected to meet learning outcomes of the module by employing an interconnected approach to these critical concepts.
The role and use of Intellectual property, its protection and exploitation, will also be covered as part of the R&D/Design process.
An understanding and application of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) on how materials (metals, ceramics, polymers and composites) are selected and specified in industry will be developed. You will also gain an understanding of materials and product manufacture and causes of materials and structural failure.
Your learning will be achieved from lectures and seminars where you will be given the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding by undertaking both individual exercises such as; product deconstruction and revitalisation and group activity based exercises

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a variety of engaging learning opportunities: there will be a lecture programme to cover technical aspects and transfer knowledge as well as lab based CAE tools development sessions which, for example, will be supported by case studies or invited industrial speakers. Your experience will be enhanced by engagement with real world problems, whereby you will apply innovation, design theory and simulation to predict the performance of a product and potentially manufacture your designs as working prototypes.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module will be delivered by a module team who will manage and deliver the lecture programme, seminar and tutorial support. The lectures will be used to explain key concepts and then the directed learning will encourage you to develop independent learning, supported by the seminar discussions with both peers and academics. The CAD, ICME and FEA software resources will be made available to you to download to your own pc/laptops and learning materials will be available through the e-learning portal. The use of e-learning portal discussion board and the feedback surveys will enable issues which may arise to be highlighted and resolved quickly and efficiently. Directed learning from key texts will be indicated and lectures will be made available on eLP before their actual presentation to enable students to prepare for the topics covered in class in advance.

Summative Assessments

1 - Coursework (50%, 3000 words or equivalent) assessing

Individual written
feedback will be provided within 20 working days on all summative assessment.

Formative Assessments

Seminars will involve discussion and problem solving sessions in which you will be able to consider, discuss and reflect on issues which will feed forward to your further learning and the assessed work.





Module abstract

Mechanical Design and Analysis – is fundamental to designing the sustainable innovative products and infrastructure that we all take for granted. This module will enable you to generate innovative, robust and sustainable, solutions to poorly defined problems. Solutions which consider all aspects; environmental, manufacture, materials, reliability, operation and true life-cycle cost of ownership.
You will learn to apply advanced techniques for 3D design, analysis (design/materials/life-cycle cost), manufacture and evaluation to test a range of potential solutions to determine the optimum solution.
Assessment is based on understanding of design techniques and demonstrating their application to an engineering product.

Courses starting in 2021 are offered as a mix of online and face to face teaching due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
