This module is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and techniques to be able to formulate Logistics and Supply Chain Management understanding of Strategic Supply Chain Relationship Management. The module covers the contribution of Logistics and Supply Chain Management to organizational strategy. Exposure to newer developments in this area will allow the students to evaluate and assess the potential for their adoption as complementary or alternative procedures in Supply Chain Management in addition to evaluating a manufacturing organization via Business Simulation.

Delivery is by Lectures and Seminar. Assessment involves two assignments, one covering critical understanding aspects of strategic supply chain relationships, the other involving a report relating to the running of a business simulation.
Major Component of Assessment - Assignment (75% weighting)
Individual 3000 word assignment: a critical evaluation of different Strategic Supply Chain Relationships theories, strategies and tools through both practical and theoretical contribution.

Minor Component of Assessment – Assignment (25% weighting)
An individual report 2000 words: summative report on the Business Simulation evaluation based on the data gathered from the rounds of the group simulation and an individual critical reflection of the exercise during the formatively assessed rounds held during the seminar sessions.

Business Simulation:
Creation of a simulated business in the European Automotive Industry over the seminar period incorporating Finance, Marketing and Operations Management Lectures and Seminars to enhance the module experience. Students work in mixed groups to produce a simulated automotive manufacturing business and compete with each group for market share.


The module aims to: (75% of Module Assessment)

• To evaluate the principles of Supply Chain Management in manufacturing; retail and service activities within the global environment.
• To assess practices and cultural factors of SCM operations within different countries, especially those from whom students are drawn and to explore and evaluate Supply Chain operational practice and performance in specified international organizations.

In addition the module aims to : (25% of Module Assessment)

Introduce the students to the main business functions of Finance, Marketing and Operations – and show how each can contribute to the Value Creation of an organization and how the functions interact with each other.

Demonstrate how responsible and integrated decision-making can contribute towards an organization operating in a competitive market environment working towards meeting its strategic objectives.


1. Acquire, interpret and apply knowledge of global business, management and organizational functions and therefore be able to critically assess the wider impact of individual and organizational decision making.

2. Acquire, interpret and critically appraise knowledge of strategic supply chain partnerships and associated relationship management.








The module is supported by a teaching and learning plan which outlines the formal sessions, together with the tutor-directed study and independent reading. An interactive approach to lecture sessions will draw upon the directed learning undertaken and participants’ own experiences. Throughout, the emphasis will be on high levels of participation, both individually and within small groups or teams. Participants can therefore expect the reflective-practitioner approach to learning to be embedded in all workshop/seminar sessions through undertaking activities which facilitate them to apply theory to ‘real-life’ situations, critically analysing and making recommendations for appropriate ways forward for the organization/individual.

Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading, preparation for interactive activities and use of the discussion board on the e-learning platform.

Independent learning will centre upon the participants identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to the subject area or by providing deeper/broader knowledge and understanding of the subject through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, reflection, research etc.

Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence.

The approach to research rich learning within the module is primarily centred on Lectures and Seminars which provide the knowledge base for the module. A research-rich approach will be adopted, whereby learning as appropriate, will involve students discussing business simulation outcomes and critically engaging in research based discussion. This will be further supported by the teaching team using contemporary work examples to contextualize the Lecture and Seminar content within the whole module.


a Summative assessment and rationale for tasks
The Summative assessment strategy contains two different assessment types to promote learning through team elements, practical activities, research and theories.
Assignment (75%)
Individual 3000 words assignment: a critical evaluation of different strategic relationship theories, strategies and tools through both practical and theoretical contribution.
Business Simulation (25%)
A Business Simulation exercise introducing a group work element that will focus on the practical aspects of building a car manufacturing business in the European Automotive Industry. The groups would be established for seminar activities from the beginning of the module. The summative assessment will take the form of a 2000 word individual report based on the group activities.

b Additional formative assessment – details of process and rationale
Formative assessment will take place through group work, assignment discussion and reflection, discussion board activity on the e-learning platform, case study activity, and theory/practice related discussions.

Criteria will be provided to enable participants to understand what is expected of them and how they will be assessed on their performance. Participants are required to demonstrate self-reflection and reflective practice where appropriate.

c Indication of how students will get feedback and how this will support their learning

Feedback on your summative performance in this module will be provided as follows: Your assessment will be returned to you with annotated comments directly related to the assessment task. You will also be provided with a written comment on actions to be taken to improve performance in assessment overall.

Formative feedback will be provided throughout the module, particularly in relation to seminar tasks. Students should, however be aware that formative feedback can, and will, occur in any communication with an academic tutor.

This University, and the Faculty, is constantly seeking to improve its feedback to students and will pilot new initiatives on a regular basis. When such pilots involve a deviation from above, students on modules affected will be fully advised of the revised feedback approach.
