AP0522 - Careers Skills in Food and Nutrition

You will attend a series of lectures and seminars to explore key concepts relating to professional practice and to support career development learning including career choice and decision making, employability and entrepreneurship.

You will develop research and employability skills by being introduced to a range of careers resources (available through the Careers and Employment Service), job search and networking strategies (through a range of methods from face to face to LinkedIn). These are supported by the e-learning portal.

Much of the learning on this module will be experiential and you will spend 140 hours in a work place. Seminars, peer led workshops and tutorials will help you to prepare for the work related learning opportunity, support reflection and consolidate learning.

Module tutors and guidance tutors will support you to identify the work related learning opportunity and provide verbal formative feedback on your developing employability skills/graduate attributes. Resources will be available via the e-learning portal and additional workshops will be held to help you to explore a range of potential graduate employment pathways, self-employment and further study options.

You are required to compile a professional CV and cover letter in response to mock job adverts. This component of assessment is worth 30% of the final module mark. MLO IPSA 1 and 2.

You are also required to submit a 2000 word report on your experiences and reflect on your personal learning. This task ensures that you, regardless of the placement content, are able to engage with the process of personal and professional development. This component of assessment is worth 60% of the final module mark. MLO KU 1, 2, IPSA 1, 2 and PVA 1.You will have the opportunity to submit reflective logs using proformas posted on the eLP.

Formative feedback will be provided by your university tutor on the reflective logs and feedback will also be given when your tutor visits the student on placement. Feedback on the summative assessment will be returned electronically through eLP.

Your placement supervisor will also provide a brief report based on your performance, communication and employability skills, and technical aptitude (10% of the final module mark). MLO IPSA 1, PVA 1.

This module will offer a period of work experience as well as enabling you to reflect on your own knowledge, skills, understandings, experiences, personal attributes, attitude and behaviours that make you more likely to gain employment or become self-employed and ultimately be successful in your chosen career. Recognising your strengths, articulating these in applications and interviews, and identifying the types of careers which are open to you, is a challenging process and this modules supports you on your route to identifying and achieving your long-term aspirations.
