KA3000 - The Context of the Built Environment

What will I learn on this module?

You will be introduced here to the Built Environment as an industry and its context, both nationally and globally; its sectors and professional activity to give a good grounding in the industry, and one from which you can make an informed choice of career pathway. You will cover the structure and nature of the industry, commercial and financial aspects, business approaches, importance of business location and premises, culture, management and employment prospects. You will develop your ability to reflect and self assess.

How will I learn on this module?

Introductory information will be conveyed in lectures, informal project workshops or seminar situations, many of which will be student led. You will work both individually and in groups to investigate, communicate and report upon areas current practice. Where appropriate visits to building sites, landmark buildings and practices will be used to authenticate the learning and to reinforce theoretical background. You will be given the opportunity to reflect upon your learning and/or experience as it grows.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module will be delivered in a blend of lectures, smaller seminar groups and smaller still tutorial groups. Extensive use will be made of the Electronic Learning Platform (eLP) to support and complement the classroom and workplace activity.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by portfolio using a blend of presentation, textual report and graphical display. There will be five elements, which will assess MLOs 1-5.

1. An individual skills audit and report around your self-perceptions of knowledge upon entering the course.

2. A group presentation based around an aspect of a landmark building, accompanied by an individual report.

3. An individual report on your personal ideas of career path.

4. A report on research and writing styles

5. Individual reflection on integrated project.

Module abstract

You will be introduced to the range of activities in the design, development and construction of buildings. It is intended to start you thinking of your future position in the built environment professions and potential employment. This is done by setting industry related tasks both individually and in groups. They will be delivered in a mix of lectures and smaller group sessions, with guest lecturers and specialists from the wider industry. Communication skills will be developed with formative assessment and advice available to help you develop and increase your understanding. We will make use of the live office and building site, but also highlight and encourage innovative forms of communication.
