The Department of Applied Sciences has a long history of working in collaboration with industry to carry out commercially focused research to develop new products and innovative solutions to real world problems.

The department covers a wide range of scientific disciplines through research groups and enterprise units and engages with business in several different ways dependent on the requirements of our partners. Areas include, research, consultancy, workforce development and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP).

Previous projects we have worked on include:

  • Development of efficient, low cost and sustainable biocatalytic processes for the production of high value chemicals
  • Using synthetic biology to create microbes to convert cheap biomass into green sustainable chemicals
  • Development of new techniques and reagents for use in diagnostic medicine for the identification of cancer
  • Research to mitigate contaminant formation in food processing
  • Analysis of artists’ materials and techniques, paint and fibre
  • Forensic case work for both prosecution and defence including forensic DNA profiling, facial identification, Interpretation of fibres, Analytical toxicology
  • Genomic sequencing and characterisation of genomes
