COURSE INFORMATION
3 years full-time or 4 years sandwich
School of Computing, Engineering and Information SciencesPandon Building, Newcastle City Campus
The computer games industry is thriving within the UK and the expansion of the home entertainment market is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. This course has been developed in close consultation with industry and will provide challenging enjoyable study programme.
The degree combines computer programming and mathematical disciplines with aspects of games design. The programme foundation is built upon developing competency in programming, systems architecture, multimedia technologies, human computer interaction, graphics, animation, sound and video complemented by a strong appreciation of the software design and management processes and principles.
On completing the programme students will be expected to demonstrate creativity in problem-solving and decision-making in complex situations and also creativity and imagination in design situations. They should be able to effectively and professionally communicate information, ideas, arguments, problems and solutions in both written and oral form to specialist and non-specialist audiences, initiative, personal responsibility, personal enterprise self-reliance and self-direction will be demonstrated as will acting autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level.

COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
Modules are usually assessed by either coursework and/or end-of-module examination. Students must complete an individual project in the final year. As part of this project, an evaluation report must be produced to describe and assess the project progress.
CAREERS
There are a wide variety of opportunities in small start-up companies and major multi-national players for skilled games programmers. This programme of study is intended to equip students for careers in computer games software engineering. Graduates from this degree would also be particularly well suited to scientific computing and physical modelling situations, but will be able to succeed in most areas of general computing, as a broad grounding in software engineering principles is given.
