INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH THEMES

BACK TO RESEARCH

Northumbria's Interdisciplinary Research Themes (IDRTs) are central to the research landscape of Northumbria University. These interdisciplinary communities of practice bring together expertise from across the University to address the pressing regional, societal and global challenges of this century and beyond. These communities operate at the intersections between departments, providing additionality to the high quality research being undertaken in departments and research groups. They offer unique platforms for new collaborations to emerge and deliver cutting-edge, impactful research and attract new funding opportunities.

WHAT DO IDRTS DO?

  • Support, facilitate and generate world leading research programmes and activities, turning interdisciplinary research into real-world solutions, often aligned to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Raise the international, national and regional profile of research areas faster than would otherwise be possible, through the research environment of the IDRTs, and enhanced by opportunities to collaboration with the Global Marketing and Business Team to promote research news and developments
  • Enable new collaborations of researchers across departments to develop creatively and spontaneously, with the potential to work together, strengthen the depth of interdisciplinary expertise within funding bids, and attract external income in support of research including large research grants.
  • Facilitate new strategic partnerships with individuals and organisations outside the university at regional, national and international levels
  • Deliver career development opportunities for staff and postgraduate researchers including opportunities to present research and establish new working relationships.
  • Create communities of practice across disciplines, enabling rich, collaborative discussions about research from a range of diverse perspectives to generate high quality research.
